Builders in Sylvania

St Anthony Building Group works in Sylvania, on the Georges River side of the Sutherland Shire, building duplexes, new homes and granny flats and renovating homes. We are a licensed NSW builder (Contractor Licence 457054C).

Sylvania homes on the Georges River

Sylvania runs down to the Georges River, with Gwawley Bay and Oyster Bay on its edges. Houses are the most common home here: about six in ten occupied dwellings were separate houses in the 2021 Census, and a little over a quarter were semi-detached homes, townhouses or terraces, a higher share than in many neighbouring suburbs.

Sylvania has no railway station of its own. Gymea and Miranda stations on the T4 line are the closest. The Georges River Bridge, which crosses the river from Sylvania, is itself a listed heritage item.

Local planning

Local planning notes for Sylvania

Sylvania is covered by Sutherland Shire Council and the Sutherland Shire Local Environmental Plan 2015. On the State planning maps, waterfront and low-lying lots in Sylvania pick up more overlays than streets further back:

  • Foreshore area: Parts of the Sylvania waterfront are shown as foreshore area on the plan's Foreshore Building Line map, which limits where new building work can go on those lots.
  • Coastal environment: About a third of the suburb is inside the Coastal Environment Area mapped under State Environmental Planning Policy (Resilience and Hazards) 2021.
  • Acid sulfate soils: The plan maps acid sulfate soils across Sylvania, including Class 1 land, which matters for excavation, pools and basements.
  • Heritage: Listed items include the Georges River Bridge and the Tom Uglys Punt Site, as well as several waterfront houses and boatsheds.

Check your lot on the NSW Planning Portal, or ask Sutherland Shire Council for a planning certificate, before settling on a design.

Sylvania building FAQs

Can’t see your question? Call 0421 023 012 and we’ll talk it through.

Can I build a duplex in Sylvania?

It depends on your lot's zone, size and shape under the Sutherland Shire Local Environmental Plan 2015. Some duplexes can be approved as complying development and others need a development application. We completed a duplex in Sylvania in September 2026 and can look at your block with you.

Do foreshore controls apply to my Sylvania property?

They can on waterfront lots. Parts of the Sylvania foreshore are mapped as foreshore area, and about a third of the suburb is in the Coastal Environment Area. Check your lot on the NSW Planning Portal before you design.

Is there a train station in Sylvania?

No. The nearest stations are Gymea and Miranda, both on the T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra Line.
