Como houses by the river
Como is almost entirely houses. In the 2021 Census more than nine in ten occupied homes were separate houses, one of the highest shares in the Shire, and flats were close to non-existent.
Como Station is on the T4 line, and the old lattice girder railway bridge, now a cycleway, is listed for its State heritage significance.
Local planning
Local planning notes for Como
Building work in Como is assessed by Sutherland Shire Council against the Sutherland Shire Local Environmental Plan 2015, among other controls. Its waterfront setting brings several overlays:
- Foreshore area: Parts of Como's waterfront are shown as foreshore area on the plan's Foreshore Building Line map.
- Coastal mapping: Around two fifths of the suburb is in the Coastal Environment Area, and coastal wetlands are mapped along parts of the shore.
- Heritage: Listed items include the Como Pleasure Grounds, the former Como railway bridge and the house known as "Café de Como".
- Bush fire: Bush fire prone land, mostly buffer, is mapped in parts of the suburb.
Check your lot on the NSW Planning Portal, and ask Sutherland Shire Council for a planning certificate, before starting design.
Our services
Services we offer in Como
Home renovations suit Como's established houses, from kitchens and living areas to extensions.
New homes and knockdown rebuilds can replace an older Como house where the lot's foreshore and coastal mapping allow.
Granny flats may fit on a Como house block, depending on its zone, slope and overlays.
Bathroom renovations bring older Como homes up to date without a larger build.
Duplexes are less common in a suburb of mostly separate houses, but we can check whether your lot's zone allows one.
Interior design and architectural design help plan a home that responds to a Como block's views and levels.
Nearby suburbs
Como adjoins Jannali and Oyster Bay, and faces Illawong across the Woronora River.
