Gymea houses and the local centre
Gymea is an inland suburb with a local centre and its own station on the T4 line. Its housing is mixed: in the 2021 Census about 45 per cent of occupied homes were separate houses, close to a third were flats or apartments and just over a fifth were semi-detached homes or townhouses.
Unlike its waterfront neighbour Gymea Bay, Gymea has no foreshore land, and the State maps show only a small area of bush fire buffer.
Local planning
Local planning notes for Gymea
Gymea is in the Sutherland Shire Council area, under the Sutherland Shire Local Environmental Plan 2015. For most Gymea lots the planning picture is simpler than on the water, but check:
- Your zone: About half the suburb is zoned R2 Low Density Residential, with sizeable R3 Medium Density areas, some R4 High Density Residential and the E1 Local Centre zone for the village.
- Trees and gardens: Several of Gymea's heritage items are trees, including street plantings of eucalypts, as well as the Hazelhurst garden and a natural sandstone arch bridge. Work near a listed tree may need extra care and approval.
The NSW Planning Portal shows the zone for your address; a planning certificate from Sutherland Shire Council gives the formal detail.
