Cronulla homes by the beach and bay
Cronulla is the Shire's beachside centre, between Bate Bay on the ocean side and Gunnamatta Bay on Port Hacking. Apartments dominate: in the 2021 Census about seven in ten occupied homes were flats or apartments, and about one in five was a separate house.
Cronulla Station is the end of the T4 line's Cronulla branch, and ferries cross Port Hacking from Cronulla to Bundeena.
Local planning
Local planning notes for Cronulla
Cronulla falls under Sutherland Shire Council and the Sutherland Shire Local Environmental Plan 2015. Because it is coastal and has a long history, it carries more overlays than most suburbs:
- Heritage: Cronulla has more listed heritage items than any other Sutherland Shire suburb we cover, among them Cronulla Railway Station, Cronulla Post Office, Gunnamatta Park and The Esplanade. Cronulla Railway Station group and the Cronulla Fisheries Centre are also on the State Heritage Register.
- Coastal and foreshore: A large share of the suburb is in the Coastal Environment Area, and parts of the waterfront are mapped as foreshore area on the plan's Foreshore Building Line map.
- Entertainment precinct: The plan maps a Cronulla Special Entertainment Precinct within the suburb.
- Acid sulfate soils: All five classes are mapped in Cronulla.
Check your address on the NSW Planning Portal, and ask Sutherland Shire Council for a planning certificate, before you plan work.
